LeKK Adverts - Take The Cat Cocos!

Just over the 'hump' with the week-end before us! Planning ahead and heading to Praslin and La Digue for a long relaxing week-end! The best way to get there to experience and take in the sights is to take the ferry. There are still a few schooners making the trip under sail power which you may consider. Slow going yes but this method brings you back into time!

Another option is to take the 'Cat Cocos' from Mahe to Praslin! Fast, comfortable and a great experience all around! Either way enjoy your hop over to the island of Praslin!

Some background information for you on the beautiful island of Praslin.

Praslin is the second largest island (38 km²) of the Seychelles, lying 44 km north east of Mahé. Praslin has a population of around 6,500 people and comprises two administrative districts; Baie Sainte Anne and Grand' Anse (Praslin). The main settlements are the Baie Ste Anne, Anse Volbert and Grand' Anse.

It was named Isle de Palmes by explorer Lazare Picault in 1744. During that time it was used as a hideaway by pirates and Arab merchants. In 1768 it was renamed Praslin in honor of French diplomat César Gabriel de Choiseul, duc de Praslin.

Praslin is known as a tourist destination with several hotels and resorts, as well as a number of beaches such as Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette. It also has substantial tracts of tropical forests with birds such as the endemic Seychelles Bulbul and the Seychelles Black Parrot. The beautiful Vallée de Mai Nature Preserve is known for the unique coco de mer and vanilla orchids. It has been reported that General Charles George Gordon of Khartoum (1833-1885) was convinced that Vallée de Mai was the Biblical "Garden of Eden".

Wonderful Maquettes For You

Once the ocean waters around the Seychelles teamed with sailing ships. Some were ships flagged from France or Great Britain. Others from Persia, the Arabian states and India. While others flew not flags from any state but rather were "states" unto themselves. Pirates and the treasures they pillaged brought they say to the quiet and secluded beaches of what was then deserted islands to be buried and lost forever.

Great rivalries to did the islands witness as years later the French fleets and British warships came to blows each vying for the islands as an outpost for their empire.

Many a time did the then French governor of the Seychelles cede power to the British upon seeing the British colours over the horizon. Down would come the flag of mother France and up would come the Union Jack only to be changed again once the British vessel set off sailing away to protect the interests of the British realm far from Seychelles.

Even American whaling ships from Boston or Hawaii made the Seychelles a base for their repairs. From the workshops of craftsmen whose passion is the sailing history of the region, own one of these magnificent replicas and hear the faint shout of mariners long since gone struggling to maintain the sails in the monsoon winds. Exquisite detail and craftsmanship can be yours today for home, office or as a gift.

Pirates And Treasures In Seychelles.

(Photo: MV.SEYPIRATE Once Catered To Tourists Now Beached At The BoatYard At L'Union Estate, La Digue, Seychelles)

Olivier Levasseur (Calais, 1680 or 1690 - Réunion, 7 July 1730), was a pirate, nicknamed La Buse or La Bouche (The Buzzard) in his early days, called thus because of the speed with which he threw himself on his enemies.

His name first appears in 1716, when he joined the Benjamin Hornigold pirate company. Levasseur was a good climber. He had a scar across one eye, limiting his view.

After a year of successful looting, the Hornigold party split, with Levasseur deciding to try his luck on the West African coast. In 1719 he operated together with Howell Davis and Thomas Cocklyn for a period. In 1720, he was shipwrecked in the Red Sea and stranded at the island Mayotte, one of the Comores. His eye was completely mutilated by now, and he decided to wear an eyepatch.

From 1721 onwards he committed his raids from his base on the island of Saint Mary's, off the Madagascar coast. His biggest success was the conquering of the Portuguese vessel Nossa Senhora do Cabo (The Virgin of the Cape), which was full of gold, together with the English pirate John Taylor.

He was eventually captured and hanged for piracy on the island of Bourbon (today Réunion) on 7 July 1730.

Legend tells that when he stood on the scaffold he had a necklace around his neck, containing a cryptogram of 12 lines, and would have thrown this in the crowd while exclaiming: "Find my treasure, he who may understand it!" What became of this necklace is unknown: to this day, many treasure hunters have searched for his fabulous treasure, estimated to be worth anywhere from a few million euros to 100 million UK pounds.

In 1923 a Mrs. Savoy found some documents, describing Levasseur's treasure on a southern island of the Seychelles group.

In one document there are some coordinates, and text in a mysterious alphabet.

At the Bel Ombre beach on the island of Mahé, stones were found, with carvings of dogs, snakes, tortoises, horses, a ballot box, a figure of a young woman, and the head of a man.

After some excavations they discovered two coffins containing the remains of two people, identified as pirates by the gold ring in their left ear, but no treasure was found at this location.

The cryptogram was much more difficult to solve than she had believed.
Deciphering it could be carried out only by starting from the Clavicles of Solomon, two letters, a will and documents compiled in rebus or at least in initiatory writing which could be put in relation to masonic symbolism.

These documents explicitly affirmed the existence of a treasure localised on an island in the Indian Ocean.

However the name of this island was not mentioned anywhere.

In 1947 Englishman Reginald Cruise-Wilkins, a friend of Mrs. Savoy, studied the problem and discovered a connection with the twelve labours of Hercules. Various tasks, representing the Labours of Hercules, had to be undertaken in strict order.

The treasure chamber is somewhere underground and must be approached carefully, to avoid being inundated. It is protected by the tides, which require damming to hold them back, and is to be approached from the north. Access is through a stairwell cut into the rocks, and tunnels leading under the beach. Until 1970 he sought and dug in the island of Mahé.

In a cave, except for old guns, some coins, and pirate sarcophagi, he did not find anything.

He died in 1977 before he broke the last piece of code.

The story of Levasseur's treasure was featured in the comic book series Spike and Suzy (also known in the UK as Bob & Bobette or the original names "Suske en Wiske" by the Flemish author Willy Vandersteen), in the album The Amazing Coconut (1990).

There the medallion of Levasseur was taken by a bird, which fled into the forest, where it became trapped in a mature fruit called Coco de mer. This Coco was sold in Belgium in 1988 to the heroes of the series, and they went on to discover the medallion and finally the treasure.

Getting Lost. Part 2

After only a few days back on the 'big' island of Mahe, Seychelles, I make it back, perhaps like a hawk bill turtle heading home to 'its' beach where many years earlier she was hatched, to the island of La Digue.
An online search for La Digue will reveal the following,"La Digue is the fourth largest inhabited island of the Seychelles, lying east of Praslin and west of Felicite Island. It has a population of about 2,000 people, who mostly live in the west coast villages of La Passe (linked by ferry to Praslin and Mahé) and La Réunion. It has an area of 10 km². La Digue is named after a ship in the fleet of French explorer Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne, who visited the Seychelles in 1768.

Today the island's main industry is tourism and is known for its beaches especially Anse Source d'Argent. In the island's interior is Veuve Nature Reserve, home of the rare Black Paradise Flycatcher, of which there are only about 100 in existence. La Digue's tallest peak is also in the central part of the island, Belle Vue (Eagle's Nest Mountain), with its summit more than 300 meters above sea level."

When I was younger and La Digue seemed much 'bigger' I recall sitting on the steps of Chateau St. Cloud, our family home and looking up towards 'Belle Vue'. At that time the 'chateau' was run by my Great Grand Mother, Madame Kersley, the matriarch of the family and well respected if not a little feared by myself. In the dark hours so many things would wander through my mind as my great grand mother would approach holding a candle in hand calling at all the children to come inside.

As I sit on the ferry heading back to La Digue yet again, I am accompanied by a pod of dolphins, swimming along our boat. For a moment I am distracted as I look at them and marvel.

How it must have been the same so many years ago when my father with his father and mother made the journey by boat from the 'big' island to La Digue. A 4 hour trip if the winds were right.

As I approach by sea I can see Belle Vue, its lush greenery reaching out, and below its shadow the settlements. I am eager to come ashore now and experience once again what is La Digue.

This entry is dedicated to the memory of our beloved grand father. Karl St. Ange who passed on from us, 7th of May 2009. He was always part of La Digue and forever will be.

Travel ADVISORY - Update

Hi there! WoW what a busy week and back and forth on many fronts. Of course right now top among many 'concerns' is the ongoing matter of the 'H1N1' flu. While in Mexico it appears that the cases were over blown and the reported cases are declining, it does appear that in other parts of the world, 'cases' of apparent 'H1N1' are being reported.

This is why at this time, I am taking the time to post a travel advisory recently sent by our travel partner.

Shortly however I will be back to 'talk' about a great little, comfortable, and affordable family run hotel!

See you soon!By the way Seychelles Health Authorities continue to remain pro-active on the matter of 'H1N1' flu and together with Seychelles Tourism Authority are offering the Seychelles as the place to visit!

Travel Advisory:-

Please note the following:

1. There is NO official ban on travel to Mexico. Travelers may continue with their original travel plans.

2. Rovia's position is that safety is the utmost concern for our customers. It is our suggestion that customers follow the advice of the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC): The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention issued an advisory yesterday, urging Americans to cancel non-essential travel to Mexico.

Additionally, U.S. and Mexican officials have set up border checks to identify travelers who may have the flu, and airports across both countries have begun taking similar steps to prevent the spread of the virus, including passive screenings of passengers who appear to be ill.

The top health official in the European Union urged Europeans not to travel to the United States and other areas where the flu has been detected.

Our actions are as follows:

DreamTrips - The April 29th departure has been cancelled, and an email as well as a phone call, has been made today to all those impacted by the cancellation. Kari and Lisha Schneider, who were hosting this trip are planning to host another trip. Details will be released from the DreamTrips Department in the coming days. All future DreamTrips departures to Mexico will be handled on a case-by-case basis. You will be notified if your DreamTrip vacation is impacted in any way.

Rovia - Rovia will waive all refund and or cancellation fees associated with travel to and from Mexico from now until May 6, 2009.
Here is an overview of the actions taken by other members of the travel community as well as some of our key partners and suppliers:

Airlines - Nearly every U.S. airline with service to and from Mexico is now waiving cancellation fees and penalties, allowing passengers to rebook flights due to concerns about the virus. Restrictions vary widely, so check with individual carriers for their specific rules.

Cruise Lines - Major cruise lines have confirmed that, for now, they will continue with current itineraries that include port stops in Mexico. (Travel Weekly points out that 25 percent of all cruises include a port of call in Mexico.)

Tour Operators/Wholesalers - Several tour operators have taken steps to help agents work with clients who wish to change their vacations to Mexico.

Apple Vacations - will allow travelers to change their plans without penalty through May 6, 2009, receiving a full credit to switch to a different Apple destination (providing that the airline involved can also make the change).

Funjet Vacations - will waive penalties through May 6, 2009, for travel completed by April 30, 2010 (for moving an existing Mexico booking to a later date, or switching the booking to a different destination). Agents with questions may call: 800.558.3050

MLT Vacations - is offering several options. Travelers who bought a travel protection plan may cancel their Mexico trips between April 27 - May 6, 2009, up to the moment of departure. Those who did not buy the plan may request a refund. However, cancellation fees will apply and will be deducted from the refund amount.

Also, your clients may shift to a different destination without penalty within seven days of the original departure date, or they may cancel and receive a gift card refund that may be applied to a different destination within 60 days (less a $50 service fee per person).

Travel Impressions - has set up a toll-free hotline at 866.789.5384, to help you rebook clients by May 6, 2009, for travel scheduled through April 30, 2010. The company is waiving any internal change fees through May 12, 2009.

www.uniqueoffers.rovia.com recommends that you consider purchasing a travel insurance packet for future trips to safeguard and protect your purchase in the event of major disruption.

For our Friends in Europe, UK, Asia, Africa please do check with your travel agent prior to making plans to travel.
