Remembering The Tsunami In Seychelles 26th Dec 2004

With the Christmas season upon us where we see ourselves celebrating with our families and close friends it is indeed fitting that we take a moment to remember all the victims of the Tsunami of 2004. Over 150,000 souls were lost that day, where early in the morning a seaquake off the coast of Indonesia, was followed by a tsunami which was felt all the way to Seychelles and to the East coast of Africa!

On the morning of the 26th December 2004, Boxing Day, or the day after Christmas, we were in the Seychelles on holiday from Ghana, and on our way for a morning swim. Earlier in the morning I watched with horror the developing story on CNN of the events unfolding off the coast of Indonesia. I remember speaking with my director at the time about the events unfolding a few thousand miles away and what effect if any the event would have on the Seychelles and our business which was located at the port area in Victoria. At the time I speculated that perhaps we would see strange tides for the coming few days. I could not have imagined that a short few hours later how wrong I would be on my speculation, thinking later how I wish I had been correct - strange tides indeed!

At around 9am Seychelles times while on the way for a morning swim we witnessed the arrival of waves which earlier in the morning had so devastated our neighbours in the Indian Ocean. I will spare you the reader of the particulars of those waves and add that never in my short life of 42 years have I seen such a mighty spectacle as that which the ocean 'played' upon our beautiful shores that day. India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Maldives, Kenya and many more countries in the Indian Ocean basin were not spared that day and neither would we in the Seychelles.

Our country is small - 116 islands, 80,000 + total population, so waves which struck down so many earlier in the day would surely not spare us!

Much damage was inflicted to homes, hotels, businesses and other structures located along our coastline that morning. Victoria our capital city was flooded several times over. Sail boats, fishing boats and other pleasure crafts were sucked out to sea and tossed about as if bath toys. Immediately the nation pulled together and began the effort of cleaning up and or securing property even as Toyota pick-up trucks floated down the street! Whilst we did not suffer massive casualties, we did nevertheless suffer a few deaths. A close and dear friend that day lost her life as she became a victim of the natural events that day. Her memory and love of life and family, will always be with us!

Indeed the Seychelles did pull together that day! It did take many months for the country to recover and rebuild what mother nature took away. Hotels were cleaned up. Homes repaired. And businesses reopened. The bridges which had been damaged or washed away were rebuilt. Those who died live on in our thoughts and hearts.

Seychelles today 5 years on is indeed what it was then and that is paradise islands on earth! We are humbled and in awe of what we have been given.

Promo Time For UniqueOffersSeychelles!LLC

Recently we were selected by our bankers, Associated Bank, to display our business to the viewing public at one of the bank's branches. A simple display with the Seychelles flag, a shell, and of course the Coco-de-Mer,were among some of the items on display.

"It was a pleasure for us to take up the offer", says Rosemary, Company President of UniqueOffersSeychelles!LLC, seen pictured standing to the right of a bank representative.

Thank you to Ms. Kia of Associated Bank for approaching us and to the bank itself for making available this platform to its business clients.

We received many enquiries over the 30 days that we were able to display and promote not only our business but the Seychelles Islands as well!

A Stroll To A Village Shop

Seychelles is not without its modern shopping delights and supermarkets. Of course being an island nation sometimes the shops do run short. If you are in Victoria you will be able to visit Teemooljee's one of 5 'supermarkets' within the town area. Don't expect a Walmart or Sainsbury, but for the basics you will be able to find what you need. When back home I often like to take a simple stroll along the road and more often then not I come to a local village shop where I know I will be able to sample and purchase some of the local snacks. A gateau pimant with a cold cola or a fruit juice and a local sweet cake to be had. With my purchase made I can make my way again along my little stroll. There is something special about being able to do this still in this day and age. No bulk buying here. Just buying what you need for the day or the night and enjoying the sights and sounds of the stroll along the road surrounded by a tropical setting. When in Seychelles do go about on a 'walkabout' sampling what is on offer in the village shop.

A Radio Made Of Bamboo!

Well OK it is not exactly a radio made of bamboo but the concept to disseminate information is still there, at least in the Seychelles it is!

A view of the beach - Grande Anse on the island of La Digue, Seychelles!

A little bit about 'radyo bamboo' or 'bamboo radio'. In the Seychelles when someone hears news or information about someone or something, gossip for the most part, we say that the 'info' was heard on radyo bamboo! Of course we do not 'gossip' here but do list premier products and services from the Seychelles & the Creole World! For more information on how to list your product or services with us do contact us by email : uniqueoffers@uniqueoffersseychelles.com

Oui Je T'Aime

Something comes to mind and heart whenever I hear this song that I have just linked to! It is forever a song of love between two souls and for me always inspirational. From the first time that I heard this number to now it always, always touches me.

I can close my eyes and for a moment I am back on the island under the tropik night sky. Warm breeze against my face, staring up to the twinkling stars. The rustling of the coconut trees, and the warmth of a touch. Hand in hand as we stroll on this deserted beach. The water calm. The waves gently lapping on the shore.

Oui je t'aime. Now listen and enjoy the song. Close your eyes for just a moment and feel again.

When Opportunity Knocks Open The Door

Today was just another day like any other. The DOW hit 10,000 for the first time in many months then slumped back down to just below that mark. I do not pretend to be one that 'buys' into the market. I merely mention this here because of the obvious impact that the 'market' has on the world.

I can recall not that long ago as I was walking along the beach of Beau Vallon one afternoon and as I did picking up on the interesting bits of conversation here and there. Yes even in this beautiful setting one could here visitors to the shores of the Seychelles talking about the 'market' and the volatility of Wall Street.

For me when one gets away one should 'get away'! Don't you think? I do. After all here we are on one of the most outstanding beaches in the world - seashells, coco-nut trees, the mighty Takamaka tree, beautiful scenery all around. Get Away Time Indeed!

Its going on 9pm in the evening or about 5 am in the Seychelles. Right now as I look out the window there is a slight chill in the air - ok not slight but definite chill and a cold rain which falls. If this continues the morning should be a fun affair indeed. How good it would be to feel the warmth of the tropic sun on my skin! Dream on!

The day will soon close for me and as I mentioned in the opening one day like any other. I was fortunate to meet a nice family from Canada,B.C, French speaking and we exchanged a few interesting words both in French and English. As well a couple from Italy on holidays in the US. As always I bring up the Seychelles and try to get them to visit.

Exchanging cards the Italian couple said that next summer they would give it a try. That was nice of them and I hope to hear from them to make their visit to the Seychelles a reality.

I will terminate for now and pick up again tomorrow. Before I do however I would ask a favour of a visit to one of our travel sites. If you do I would further ask that you price compare what we have on offer for Air Travel, Hotel Bookings against the other better known online sites. 68% of the time customers to our site found that we were in fact better priced! It does not hurt to give it a look - no?

Thank you in advance for your visit! More in a bit.

LeKK Adverts - Profile On UniqueOffers! Travel

Morning all! Or depending where you are at on this big beautiful world of ours - good evening! The other day I was updating this BLOG and had some points written down, all about 'old man winter' and the Seychelles, and when I went to post it, lost everything! Well that is life in a way. When this happens the best move, after a little bit of shouting, is to get back onto the saddle again!

So I am working on another update - again about 'old man winter' and the Seychelles, this time saving it to my file prior to posting! For those who have been blogging longer than I, I know you are probably chuckling at my apparent naivete! Well I am learning for sure!

In the meantime for those visiting this BLOG I take this time to highlight another advert appearing on LeKK Adverts on the UniqueOffersSeychelles! website!

Yes be preferred and pay no fees for airline bookings! And of course we hope to see you soon! Both signing up with us for this great travel site, and after, walking along the bustling streets of Victoria on the BIG island of Mahe in the Seychelles!

Carosol!

Hi there! Just back from a trip and meeting in Washington D.C! You see how far us 'island types' can get? A small world indeed.

So got back after a meeting about another project and got this great email from a friend. Seeing the photos brought back so many memories of the islands! Wondeful memories indeed.

What I am going to do now is basically paste onto this BLOG some interesting info about a very interesting fruit! After reading this do consider to come and visit the islands! The Seychelles awaits!

I just need to say as well that when you sign up with us you are entered and may win a $200VISA gift card!

Now for the info on the Sour Sop or Carosol.

Guyabano, The Soursop Fruit

The Sour Sop or the fruit from the graviola tree is a miraculous natural cancer cell killer 10,000 times stronger than Chemo.
Why are we not aware of this? Its because some b ig corporation want to make back their money spent on years of research by trying to make a synthetic version of it for sale.

So, since you know it now you can help a friend in need by letting him know or just drink some sour sop juice yourself as prevention from time to time. The taste is not bad after all. It’s completely natural and definitely has no side effects. If you have the space, plant one in your garden.
The other parts of the tree are also useful.

The next time you have a fruit juice, ask for a sour sop.

Besides being a cancer remedy, graviola is a broad spectrum antimicrobial agent for both bacterial and fungal infections, is effective against internal parasites and worms, lowers high blood pressure and is used for depression, stress and nervous disorders.

Seychelles indeed is blessed with so many tropical fruits - carosol or Sour Sop! Next time you are on the islands ask for one as a drink or eat it from the tree! Many of the restaurants offer this refreshing drink!

If you would like a copy of the email with the full content just let me know! Salam!

Our 'Frenchness' From The Seychelles Islands!

Allo! This is Patrik L., and I am temporarily filling in for Raymond! First & foremost let me/us wish all our friends from France and around the Francophone member states a joyeux Bastille Day! Ok so it is not the 14th of July as of today - but it was a good day to celebrate & reflect nevertheless!

Seychelles and La Belle France have a very interesting relationship and history together. In case you did not know, " Mauritius becoming a very important base for the French during the 1700's meant that our French cousins of the period had to find faster routes to the trading bastion of India! Hence in 1735 an energetic administrator, Bertrand François de la Bourdonnais (1699-1723) was appointed. His brief was to protect the French sea route to India. La Bourdonnais, himself a sailor, turned his attention to making a speedier passage from Mauritius to India. To this end, in 1742, he sent an expedition under the command of Lazare Picault to accurately chart the islands northeast of Madagascar."

And so the story continues that, "On 21 November 1742, the 'Elisabeth' and the 'Charles' anchored off Mahé (Seychelles) at Anse Boileau (not Baie Lazare, later mistakenly named as Picault's landing place). They found a land of plenty. In fact, Picault named the island Ile d'Abondonce. Picault's mapping was poor, so in 1744 he was sent back and renamed the main island Mahé ( part of Seychelles), and the group the Iles de la Bourdonnais. He had high hopes for the Iles de la Bourdonnais. However the islands were again forgotten when Labourdonnais was replaced in 1746."

"The outbreak of war between England and France reminded the authorities on Mauritius about the islands (Seychelles). Two ships were sent to claim them, commanded by Corneille Nicholas Morphey. He renamed the largest island Isle de Séchelles in honour of Viscount Jean Moreau de Séchelles, Minister of Finance during the reign of Louis XV (later Anglicised as Seychelles). This was later used for the island group, whilst Mahé was again used for the largest granitic island. Morphey took possession for his king and the French East India Company on 1 November 1756."

With that came a more permanent settelement and with some very hard work, a flourishing colony under the Royal flag of the King of France!

Seychelles is still a place where even 253 years later one needs to come, visit, experience the islands - home to the Coco de Mer, the giant land tortoise, the Black Parrot and so many other rare and endemic species of flora, fauna, and oh YES, great treks, beaches, sun, diving, waterfalls, food, and most importantly the ambience of the Creole people! Did I mention the underwater splendour of the surrounding waters? No? OK and the underwater splendour of the surrounding waters teaming with fish, dolphins and other marvels!

Fly there, swim, no matter how, just make the time to come and visit!

Now with that said and after wishing one and all a Happy 14th of July 2009, a short history tour of how the islands came to be within the French realm, I am supposed to update you to the fact that by next week the main website for 'UniqueOffersSeychelles!' will be updated giving it a fresher and cleaner feeling! So job accomplished! Another post and another update shortly! Ciao!

P.S. Wikipedia is a great source of info about the islands of the Seychelles!

I Recommend. Taking In The Sights At The 'Pirates'

So it is Friday 12th June 2009 and right now on the islands it is just about to strike 6pm! What am I doing right now? Well about to go and sit down at the main 'watering hole' in 'downtown' Victoria - The Pirates Arms, meet the mates and do some 'peoples' watching.

Actually I am running a bit late because the best time to do this 'peoples watching' is around noon time! But anytime in the Seychelles is a good time to watch the 'peoples' enjoy a good drink and share some stories after a 'hard' week on the islands! Hard? Yeah right!

Great weather, beautiful beaches, great food, the smiles of the 'Creole' folks! This is HARD? Nope!

And after a drink or two? Head for a great Creole dish either at home or at a little eating place nearby, catch a film at Deepam's then head for a quiet walk on the beach to watch the best night show around! The night sky of the Seychelles! Twinkle, twinkle....

Enjoy your week-end!

Oops! In case you have been following - I do promise to update this blog shortly with "The Ghost Of Farquhar"!

Where are the Farquhar's?

The Farquhar Group belong to the Outer Islands of the Seychelles, lying in the southwest of the island nation, more than 700 kilometres southwest the capital, Victoria, on Mahé Island. The total land area of all islands in the group is less than 11 km², but the total area of the atolls measures about 370 km².

The group consists of two atolls and one separate island. In addition, there is one separate submerged reef in the area:

Farquhar Atoll (with two larger and about eight smaller islets)
Providence Atoll (with 2 islets, Providence Island and Cerf Island)
St. Pierre Island
Wizard Reef (submerged)
There are only two settlements. The main settlement is on ÃŽle du Nord (North Island) of Farquhar Atoll, and the other one on Providence Island of Providence Atoll.

Celebrate World Oceans Day! June 8th 2009

The concept for World Oceans Day was proposed in 1992 by the Government of Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro and it had been unofficially celebrated every year since then. Official designation by the U.N. is a significant step in conserving and protecting our world's ocean.

World Oceans Day provides an opportunity each year to celebrate our world ocean and our personal connection to the sea. The Ocean Project, working closely with the World Ocean Network each year, helps to coordinate events and activities with aquariums, zoos, museums, conservation organizations, universities, schools, businesses.

So Much Inspiration!

The thick jungles of the Seychelles. Virgin forests set in vibrant tropical colours. Running streams leading to a waterfall where once giant land tortoises drank. Village settings. Fishermen by their boats after an early morning fishing trip. Families out to the local shop for the night's groceries. Many images captured by the imagination of this artist, Gerard Devoud, are brought to life and now made available to you at your leisure at your fingertips.

If you are planning to be in Seychelles then plan on visiting the Gerard Devoud Art Gallery now at two convenient locations - Les Mamelles Gallery and ValMer Resort at Baie Lazare, both on the big island of Mahe, the main island of the Seychelles.

Shop online for the art works of Gerard Devoud. Own a 'Devoud' today. Le Kool Kreole Gallery.

Shopping at the 'corner market' as all shops close early on Saturdays and briefly open again late in the afternoon only for a brief spell. Unless you know the shopkeeper, do not count on the shop opening for you on a Sunday! Of course in an emergency and if 'madame' is in need, then of course the doors will be opened.

La Digue. At Your Own Pace!

Well after an enjoyable trip over to Praslin on the 'Cat Cocos' and setting foot on the jetty at Baie Ste. Anne, there was enough time for a little stroll around the pier and to feed the fish which thrive in the waters here.

As I sit, I watch and take in the sights of tourists and locals moving about. Small crafts and larger yachts anchored in the bay, the sun glimmering off of the calm waters.

It is a lovely day and soon, quite soon our ferry will depart for a quick 15 minute ride over to La Digue.

At your own pace - once setting foot on La Digue there will be plenty of time to get lost and do nothing!

LeKK Adverts - Take The Cat Cocos!

Just over the 'hump' with the week-end before us! Planning ahead and heading to Praslin and La Digue for a long relaxing week-end! The best way to get there to experience and take in the sights is to take the ferry. There are still a few schooners making the trip under sail power which you may consider. Slow going yes but this method brings you back into time!

Another option is to take the 'Cat Cocos' from Mahe to Praslin! Fast, comfortable and a great experience all around! Either way enjoy your hop over to the island of Praslin!

Some background information for you on the beautiful island of Praslin.

Praslin is the second largest island (38 km²) of the Seychelles, lying 44 km north east of Mahé. Praslin has a population of around 6,500 people and comprises two administrative districts; Baie Sainte Anne and Grand' Anse (Praslin). The main settlements are the Baie Ste Anne, Anse Volbert and Grand' Anse.

It was named Isle de Palmes by explorer Lazare Picault in 1744. During that time it was used as a hideaway by pirates and Arab merchants. In 1768 it was renamed Praslin in honor of French diplomat César Gabriel de Choiseul, duc de Praslin.

Praslin is known as a tourist destination with several hotels and resorts, as well as a number of beaches such as Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette. It also has substantial tracts of tropical forests with birds such as the endemic Seychelles Bulbul and the Seychelles Black Parrot. The beautiful Vallée de Mai Nature Preserve is known for the unique coco de mer and vanilla orchids. It has been reported that General Charles George Gordon of Khartoum (1833-1885) was convinced that Vallée de Mai was the Biblical "Garden of Eden".

Wonderful Maquettes For You

Once the ocean waters around the Seychelles teamed with sailing ships. Some were ships flagged from France or Great Britain. Others from Persia, the Arabian states and India. While others flew not flags from any state but rather were "states" unto themselves. Pirates and the treasures they pillaged brought they say to the quiet and secluded beaches of what was then deserted islands to be buried and lost forever.

Great rivalries to did the islands witness as years later the French fleets and British warships came to blows each vying for the islands as an outpost for their empire.

Many a time did the then French governor of the Seychelles cede power to the British upon seeing the British colours over the horizon. Down would come the flag of mother France and up would come the Union Jack only to be changed again once the British vessel set off sailing away to protect the interests of the British realm far from Seychelles.

Even American whaling ships from Boston or Hawaii made the Seychelles a base for their repairs. From the workshops of craftsmen whose passion is the sailing history of the region, own one of these magnificent replicas and hear the faint shout of mariners long since gone struggling to maintain the sails in the monsoon winds. Exquisite detail and craftsmanship can be yours today for home, office or as a gift.

Pirates And Treasures In Seychelles.

(Photo: MV.SEYPIRATE Once Catered To Tourists Now Beached At The BoatYard At L'Union Estate, La Digue, Seychelles)

Olivier Levasseur (Calais, 1680 or 1690 - Réunion, 7 July 1730), was a pirate, nicknamed La Buse or La Bouche (The Buzzard) in his early days, called thus because of the speed with which he threw himself on his enemies.

His name first appears in 1716, when he joined the Benjamin Hornigold pirate company. Levasseur was a good climber. He had a scar across one eye, limiting his view.

After a year of successful looting, the Hornigold party split, with Levasseur deciding to try his luck on the West African coast. In 1719 he operated together with Howell Davis and Thomas Cocklyn for a period. In 1720, he was shipwrecked in the Red Sea and stranded at the island Mayotte, one of the Comores. His eye was completely mutilated by now, and he decided to wear an eyepatch.

From 1721 onwards he committed his raids from his base on the island of Saint Mary's, off the Madagascar coast. His biggest success was the conquering of the Portuguese vessel Nossa Senhora do Cabo (The Virgin of the Cape), which was full of gold, together with the English pirate John Taylor.

He was eventually captured and hanged for piracy on the island of Bourbon (today Réunion) on 7 July 1730.

Legend tells that when he stood on the scaffold he had a necklace around his neck, containing a cryptogram of 12 lines, and would have thrown this in the crowd while exclaiming: "Find my treasure, he who may understand it!" What became of this necklace is unknown: to this day, many treasure hunters have searched for his fabulous treasure, estimated to be worth anywhere from a few million euros to 100 million UK pounds.

In 1923 a Mrs. Savoy found some documents, describing Levasseur's treasure on a southern island of the Seychelles group.

In one document there are some coordinates, and text in a mysterious alphabet.

At the Bel Ombre beach on the island of Mahé, stones were found, with carvings of dogs, snakes, tortoises, horses, a ballot box, a figure of a young woman, and the head of a man.

After some excavations they discovered two coffins containing the remains of two people, identified as pirates by the gold ring in their left ear, but no treasure was found at this location.

The cryptogram was much more difficult to solve than she had believed.
Deciphering it could be carried out only by starting from the Clavicles of Solomon, two letters, a will and documents compiled in rebus or at least in initiatory writing which could be put in relation to masonic symbolism.

These documents explicitly affirmed the existence of a treasure localised on an island in the Indian Ocean.

However the name of this island was not mentioned anywhere.

In 1947 Englishman Reginald Cruise-Wilkins, a friend of Mrs. Savoy, studied the problem and discovered a connection with the twelve labours of Hercules. Various tasks, representing the Labours of Hercules, had to be undertaken in strict order.

The treasure chamber is somewhere underground and must be approached carefully, to avoid being inundated. It is protected by the tides, which require damming to hold them back, and is to be approached from the north. Access is through a stairwell cut into the rocks, and tunnels leading under the beach. Until 1970 he sought and dug in the island of Mahé.

In a cave, except for old guns, some coins, and pirate sarcophagi, he did not find anything.

He died in 1977 before he broke the last piece of code.

The story of Levasseur's treasure was featured in the comic book series Spike and Suzy (also known in the UK as Bob & Bobette or the original names "Suske en Wiske" by the Flemish author Willy Vandersteen), in the album The Amazing Coconut (1990).

There the medallion of Levasseur was taken by a bird, which fled into the forest, where it became trapped in a mature fruit called Coco de mer. This Coco was sold in Belgium in 1988 to the heroes of the series, and they went on to discover the medallion and finally the treasure.

Getting Lost. Part 2

After only a few days back on the 'big' island of Mahe, Seychelles, I make it back, perhaps like a hawk bill turtle heading home to 'its' beach where many years earlier she was hatched, to the island of La Digue.
An online search for La Digue will reveal the following,"La Digue is the fourth largest inhabited island of the Seychelles, lying east of Praslin and west of Felicite Island. It has a population of about 2,000 people, who mostly live in the west coast villages of La Passe (linked by ferry to Praslin and Mahé) and La Réunion. It has an area of 10 km². La Digue is named after a ship in the fleet of French explorer Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne, who visited the Seychelles in 1768.

Today the island's main industry is tourism and is known for its beaches especially Anse Source d'Argent. In the island's interior is Veuve Nature Reserve, home of the rare Black Paradise Flycatcher, of which there are only about 100 in existence. La Digue's tallest peak is also in the central part of the island, Belle Vue (Eagle's Nest Mountain), with its summit more than 300 meters above sea level."

When I was younger and La Digue seemed much 'bigger' I recall sitting on the steps of Chateau St. Cloud, our family home and looking up towards 'Belle Vue'. At that time the 'chateau' was run by my Great Grand Mother, Madame Kersley, the matriarch of the family and well respected if not a little feared by myself. In the dark hours so many things would wander through my mind as my great grand mother would approach holding a candle in hand calling at all the children to come inside.

As I sit on the ferry heading back to La Digue yet again, I am accompanied by a pod of dolphins, swimming along our boat. For a moment I am distracted as I look at them and marvel.

How it must have been the same so many years ago when my father with his father and mother made the journey by boat from the 'big' island to La Digue. A 4 hour trip if the winds were right.

As I approach by sea I can see Belle Vue, its lush greenery reaching out, and below its shadow the settlements. I am eager to come ashore now and experience once again what is La Digue.

This entry is dedicated to the memory of our beloved grand father. Karl St. Ange who passed on from us, 7th of May 2009. He was always part of La Digue and forever will be.

Travel ADVISORY - Update

Hi there! WoW what a busy week and back and forth on many fronts. Of course right now top among many 'concerns' is the ongoing matter of the 'H1N1' flu. While in Mexico it appears that the cases were over blown and the reported cases are declining, it does appear that in other parts of the world, 'cases' of apparent 'H1N1' are being reported.

This is why at this time, I am taking the time to post a travel advisory recently sent by our travel partner.

Shortly however I will be back to 'talk' about a great little, comfortable, and affordable family run hotel!

See you soon!By the way Seychelles Health Authorities continue to remain pro-active on the matter of 'H1N1' flu and together with Seychelles Tourism Authority are offering the Seychelles as the place to visit!

Travel Advisory:-

Please note the following:

1. There is NO official ban on travel to Mexico. Travelers may continue with their original travel plans.

2. Rovia's position is that safety is the utmost concern for our customers. It is our suggestion that customers follow the advice of the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC): The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention issued an advisory yesterday, urging Americans to cancel non-essential travel to Mexico.

Additionally, U.S. and Mexican officials have set up border checks to identify travelers who may have the flu, and airports across both countries have begun taking similar steps to prevent the spread of the virus, including passive screenings of passengers who appear to be ill.

The top health official in the European Union urged Europeans not to travel to the United States and other areas where the flu has been detected.

Our actions are as follows:

DreamTrips - The April 29th departure has been cancelled, and an email as well as a phone call, has been made today to all those impacted by the cancellation. Kari and Lisha Schneider, who were hosting this trip are planning to host another trip. Details will be released from the DreamTrips Department in the coming days. All future DreamTrips departures to Mexico will be handled on a case-by-case basis. You will be notified if your DreamTrip vacation is impacted in any way.

Rovia - Rovia will waive all refund and or cancellation fees associated with travel to and from Mexico from now until May 6, 2009.
Here is an overview of the actions taken by other members of the travel community as well as some of our key partners and suppliers:

Airlines - Nearly every U.S. airline with service to and from Mexico is now waiving cancellation fees and penalties, allowing passengers to rebook flights due to concerns about the virus. Restrictions vary widely, so check with individual carriers for their specific rules.

Cruise Lines - Major cruise lines have confirmed that, for now, they will continue with current itineraries that include port stops in Mexico. (Travel Weekly points out that 25 percent of all cruises include a port of call in Mexico.)

Tour Operators/Wholesalers - Several tour operators have taken steps to help agents work with clients who wish to change their vacations to Mexico.

Apple Vacations - will allow travelers to change their plans without penalty through May 6, 2009, receiving a full credit to switch to a different Apple destination (providing that the airline involved can also make the change).

Funjet Vacations - will waive penalties through May 6, 2009, for travel completed by April 30, 2010 (for moving an existing Mexico booking to a later date, or switching the booking to a different destination). Agents with questions may call: 800.558.3050

MLT Vacations - is offering several options. Travelers who bought a travel protection plan may cancel their Mexico trips between April 27 - May 6, 2009, up to the moment of departure. Those who did not buy the plan may request a refund. However, cancellation fees will apply and will be deducted from the refund amount.

Also, your clients may shift to a different destination without penalty within seven days of the original departure date, or they may cancel and receive a gift card refund that may be applied to a different destination within 60 days (less a $50 service fee per person).

Travel Impressions - has set up a toll-free hotline at 866.789.5384, to help you rebook clients by May 6, 2009, for travel scheduled through April 30, 2010. The company is waiving any internal change fees through May 12, 2009.

www.uniqueoffers.rovia.com recommends that you consider purchasing a travel insurance packet for future trips to safeguard and protect your purchase in the event of major disruption.

For our Friends in Europe, UK, Asia, Africa please do check with your travel agent prior to making plans to travel.

'UniqueOffersGhana' Here We Come!

Good day to all! Just a quick update. Two of them actually!! One of them involves the 'look' and 'feel' of 'UniqueOffersSeychelles' and the other concerns our 'prelim' discussions with a potential partner for 'UniqueOffersGhana' project!

It was always our intention to have 3 websites catering to Seychelles, Ghana, and Kenya. The 'Seychelles' site is now up and running and now is the time to move to the second project - being 'UniqueOffersGhana'!

Early days yet but after some back and forth with different interested parties it looks like we are about to settle on a partner who will bring much positive contributions to the project! Ghana is indeed the 'gateway' to Western Africa and the completion of this project will be very much welcome.

At the same time we are constantly looking to improve upon the 'Seychelles' product!

To all those who have visited either this 'blog' or our other sites - www.uniqueoffersseychelles.com or www.uniqueoffers.rovia.com - A Big Thank You!

All sites under 'UniqueOffers' works with small business owners and establishments directly, and more importantly where we sell or promote their products- we give back to the community, a percentage of sales generated!

Make it a great day!

More Than Just Beach & Sun!

When you think of an island what is it that is in your mind? Sun, sand and beach, quiet times, fishing, scuba, nature, trees, lush mountains, fresh air, fruits, cuisine? Ok well that is a good start for sure!

Every island has a story and a good reason why you should go and visit! And if you can, visit them all, not just the Seychelles. For all those who live on an island, be they by one or a few thousands, share a common aspiration and a link with each other no matter the distance or their geographic location.

I just love islands and living on one! They can be fun and always challenging, even today in our 21st century.

For the most part if you are going to an island you are going as a tourist which means that it will be for the most part a catered affair! My advice is mingle with the people, walk around, shop in the village shops, sample new fruits (always wash them though), learn to dance the Sega (if you are in the Seychelles), get to really know the island you are visiting and take as much as you can, in! That is the best way to enjoy.

Other ways to enjoy? Go fishing my friend. Going to the Seychelles and you want to go fishing? Great! We can recommend and organise for you a fishing trip that will last for many years in that part of the brain that stores all your 'fun' stuff!

Visit our site and go to 'Boat Charter Fishing Fun'! Enjoy!
