Seychelles. The Stars & Beyond As Another Reunion Is Eagerly Anticipated.

When one talks about the Seychelles islands one imagines the sun, the white beaches and the coco-nut trees, as well as the spicy Creole food, nature, the beauty, the rich culture and the stars, the moon, the sun, our solar system , space exploration and beyond.

Did you just read that correctly? Space the Seychelles islands together, a commonality and link?

Yes for sure you read it quite right! Let me just refresh your memory providing to you just how the Seychelles is integrally linked with space exploration and the great potential for ‘space tourism’ as an added niche marketing prospect when ‘selling’ the islands as an interesting destination.

Allow me first go to the ‘near’ present or ‘recent’ history, whichever you like, as regards the last shuttle landing bringing an end to the NASA’s space shuttle programme, as the shuttle Atlantis touched down at the Kennedy Space Center at 05:57am on July 21^st 2011. Bringing a closure to the shuttle missions, 30 years of remarkable flights and history, that started with the launch of the shuttle Columbia launching on April 12^th 1981.

To understand the link between the shuttle missions, space in general, and the role the Seychelles islands had to play let us understand that well into the shuttle missions that the U.S. satellite tracking station located on Mahe which was as of the 1^st of July 1987 known as Detachment 4, 2^nd Satellite Tracking Group, was ably assisting various US space missions to include those of NASA.

On the 6^th of August 1996 the operations of the ‘tracking station’ came to an end. It was officially decommissioned on the 15^th of August 1996 with the last American personnel leaving the property on the 30^th of September 1996 at 1400hrs according to official logs.

For about 33 years, the US tracking station becoming operational on the 9th of October 1963, sited on the main island of the Mahe, was an integral part of the US space missions.

The facility played key roles for the lunar landing of 20^th July 1969 using the 60 foot dish antenna to ‘listen’ to the astronauts on the moon talking with ‘Houston Control’ in the state of Texas in the USA. The site continued to be important to US space missions until its closure.

Other significant and interesting events occurred such as when the Pan Am seaplane made its last flight to the Seychelles on June 1972. After that personnel would then utilize the newly opened Seychelles International Airport which we all know was so very vital to Seychelles’ own launch into the world of tourism. Prior to that Tracking station personnel would fly to the Seychelles on the Pan Am Hu-16 seaplane with the first flight being in July 1963 flying from Mombasa Kenya into the Seychelles. The first sea plane flights would arrive at the Long Pier at Victoria. Today the only ‘marker’ left of any significance is a tether point which is by the slip way and was used to tie up the seaplanes.

Other memorable events, and perhaps of interest to both residents and tourists alike, was the visit by well known comic, singer and actor, Bing Crosby, who toured the facility on the 22^nd of August 1973. British author and playwright Noel Coward who fell ill while visiting the islands in November 1965 and at the request of then Governor Earl of Oxford and Asquith, was flown out of the Seychelles on an emergency medical flight to Kenya using the HU-16 seaplane.

Another interesting bit of information which links the Seychelles, the tracking station, and the world, for all those who are not only ‘fans’ of space travel and exploration, but as well film, songs, and the ‘King’, together was that a past base commander, Air Force base commander Paul Beaulieu, was the step-father to world famous Priscilla Beaulieu Presley, who was as we know was married to Elvis Presley.

The Seychelles islands and the time spent by the Beaulieu’s here was well appreciated we are certain, that at their dinner table back home, the tracking station and memories of the islands was fondly discussed.

For many years even before golf was played on the islands, and well before the world class course at Lemuria on Praslin, or the well played golf course at the Reef Golf club @ Anse Aux Pins, the ‘golf’ balls of the US Tracking Station dominated the views of island life on Mahe. Perhaps golf became popular because of it?

Sitting high above in the clouds the tracking station set among the tropical mountains, and well before the ‘blast off’ of tourism on the islands, the men and women who worked at the sites, both local and foreign, provided a technical link to the stars that until then could only appreciated from our tranquil shorelines during the clear evening nights.

The ‘space’ tracking station is now longed closed. Joining other programmes and like the closure of the space shuttle missions, to the history pages. Yet what was done for many years lives on still and soon those who served for years working at the station, living among us, marrying and moving away, creating new families, will soon return to celebrate a reunion on our island shores.

5o years since the opening of the Indian Ocean Station (IOS) which was located East from Mombasa, Kenya, one fourth of the way into the Indian Ocean, 1,094 statute miles east of Mombasa, Kenya.
2,048 statute miles southwest of Bombay, India ( Now Mumbai), 2113 statute miles north east of Maputo, Mozambique., 2287 statute miles northeast of Pretoria, South Africa, Tech Site: 4 degrees – 40 minutes South Latitude / 55 degrees – 29 minutes East Longitude. Those who are surviving will return once again to share memories with us, this sometime in 2013 as it is currently understood. When they do return they will not be simply tourists visiting a tropical island, but rather they will be ‘family’ returning to their second home welcomed by old friends and associates, who stayed behind.

Many have not been back since, while others have stayed in touch and know of the changes. A Seychelles greatly changed will be here waiting for them. We will open our arms to these pioneers who worked and lived with us and shared good times and who helped to place the Seychelles islands on not only the world map but the interstellar one as well.

The past contributions of all those who boldly stepped into the ‘future’ with the opening of the US Tracking Station, to include the hard work and determination of the Seychellois work force, is one which is well appreciated by all Seychellois and is a point of our history which I am sure would be of great interest to all visitors to our shores!

So let us give a loud ‘shout’ out to this reunion of past workers to our shores and perhaps to others as well. Our islands are here and we welcome you with open arms for our future is cemented by the positive contributions of the past. The present Seychelles is here and open for business and eager to welcome you to our friendly and still beautiful shores!

Hungry? The Best Creole Style Hamburgers West of The Pecos! In Seychelles That Is!

Friday 3^rd June 2011. Its about 5 pm and today since being back in the Seychelles Islands I managed to avoid eating lunch after evading several invites! Not that I did not want an opportunity to dine and sample some delicious Creole dishes! However 2 items led me to decide this day to ‘soldier’ on thru lunch and get some work and meetings done! First was that I had work to do and second I wanted to avoid the afternoon ‘siesta’ which seems to be overtaking me of late especially after a fine delicious lunch! J

I made it thru most of the day when driving in town, Victoria, the capital of the Seychelles I noticed a little trailer parked in the corner of a make shift car park where once the Shell petrol station had stood.

Immediately I noticed the sign on it, ‘Rams TakeAway’ and noticed that the ‘establishment was still open at 5pm. What amused me was the fact that I could drive my car right up to the parked concessions stand in what I dubbed a ‘Seychellois’ drive thru in homage to the well established drive thru’s which now dot many landscapes in the USA and beyond!

I pulled up and got out of the car and immediately smelled what I had been hoping for and that was a delicious styled hamburger 'a la Creole'!

The owner of the stand, which was built from a wrecked mini bus, was a very nice young entrepreneur by the name of Ronny. We got to talking and before I knew it I had wolfed down several of his delicious cooked beef burgers seasoned with spices Creole style! Delicious!

So when next in the Seychelles I do recommend stopping by and sampling the meals that Ronny prepares for you in his self made restaurant on wheels, all quite clean and presentable and at great prices!

Rams’ is located across from Teemooljee’s at what used to be the Shell petrol station. The area is now a make shift parking for cars and home to Ram’s TakeAway! A must stop place for wonderful simple but fast meals!

Tell Ronny that Raymond sent you. He will offer up a great warm smile and a delicious Creole style burger! Now on to my next meeting!

P.S. Ronny tells me is is there daily from about 0930 onwards closing late! :)

Supporting A Worthy Cause And So Can You!

Just over 2 years ago two fishermen set out from the island of Praslin early in the morning just as they had done every morning stretching back over many years of sunrises over our tropical shores, to head out to sea for their daily catch. Over the years since the beginning of the Seychelles really, these men, hard working men, have become the natural sight and fixture to many small villages along the coast of many of our islands. So much so that their daily struggles have become almost invisible except of course for when those very efforts at sea under the baking sun or crashing waves and rain are rewarded with bountiful catches. At that time these men of ours become for the moment the centre of attraction and the talk of the dinner table as families nourish themselves on the catch of the day.

At other times, tragic and sad times, these men of the earth who bravely faced faced great odds, life and limb daily, in surroundings far away from the safety of the shores, and away from the smiling faces of their loved ones, meet the fate perhaps already written for them in their chosen profession, never to return again.

Then at that time once again their names and prowess at sea become for the moment, and for many the moment is brief indeed, the centre of attraction. A sad moment indeed when friends and customers alike learn of the loss at sea of the brave fisherman, who daily faced the struggles that for many us will never see or experience.

Deeper still is the impact of that loss upon the family of that brave fisherman. Son, brother, father and not just a fisherman in the eyes of the family that he left behind, but salt of their flesh and blood of their tears, their everything.

Often these fishermen and their families rely heavily on the efforts of their labour, so their loss at sea is indeed deeply felt and long suffering for them.

Over two years ago tragedy struck families on the island of Praslin when two such fishermen were lost at sea. Several days later their small boat was found drifting not far from another island just beyond the reefs. Despite searches and valiant attempts neither were found.

About a week ago we received a posting of a worthy event which will occur on the 15th of May 2011 which will be held on the island of Praslin itself and by the Praslin Fishermen’s Association relating this story to us and to all on Facebook.

Their message communicated by Mr. Louis Bossy over Facebook was simple. Let us see how best as a community we can raise awareness to generate interest for the event that they will be hosting at a well known hotel on the island, this in order to raise some funds for the families who to this day still grieve at the loss of their loved ones.

Immediately we felt the impact of this as we are certain you do as well. That a community of fishermen from a tiny island in the middle of the ocean could reach out over Facebook to not only thousands of fellow Seychellois everywhere but to potentially millions of other ‘friends’ around this globe of ours was fascinating and indeed inspirational.

Once again the plight of these brave men on this small island would come to the center of our ‘universe’ attracting many to their efforts and to the worthy cause.

On the 15th of May the fishing association will gather to raise funds and awareness of not only the loss of life of two brave souls, but as well to help in some way to alleviate the financial burdens of the families who today still suffer. Our contribution is small in comparison. To donate a small amount personally, to help with the photo image which you see here, and to take the time to write this small post. It is indeed a small but worthy effort to do this. Your contribution can be as well very instrumental to making the event on the 15th of May 2011 a success. How you do this is of course up to you. That you did something as well I know would be greatly appreciated by not only the organizers but the family of those who lost their lives in yet another event which at that moment garnered some attention. Two years on we have the opportunity to acknowledge their worthy contributions.

And this to is another ‘amazing’ moment. When many friends of Seychelles and Seychellois everywhere read about this and took the time to do something!

Couple returns to ‘heavenly’ Seychelles for silver wedding anniversary

A couple from UK returned to what they described as ‘heavenly’ Seychelles this week to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary.

This is not just any vacation: they have returned to the islands where they tied the knot 25 years ago.
Gerard and Angela Barte got married at the Reef Hotel on the bright and sunny afternoon of May 5, 1986.

They took their vows under a traditional thatched gazebo and the lovely and dashing bride was given away by the hotel manager Alain St Ange.

Mr St Ange is today the Seychelles Tourism Board’s chief executive and the couple paid him a surprise visit at his offices at Bel Ombre yesterday morning.

“I can still remember that day when I walked Angela, who was carrying a white umbrella, to the groom. It was a nice, simple but very romantic wedding,” said Mr St Ange.

Gerard and Angela said they couldn’t have picked a better place to declare their love for each other and since then, they have visited the islands again in 2006 and now in 2011.

“We wanted a special location for this very important moment in our lives,” said a smiling Angela, adding: “We wanted somewhere magical, romantic, unique and with plenty of sun and sea. Seychelles was all that.”
Gerard, who is French but married an English bride, said the fact that both their languages were spoken in Seychelles, made them feel a special bond with the islands and they knew this was the place they had been looking for.

“Seychelles is beautiful and we knew we would feel at home here. People are so friendly and we made a lot of friends,” he explained.

Upon their return to the islands in 2006, they decided to spend more days here so as to better appreciate the place and culture, and they took the occasion to renew their vows at the St Paul’s Cathedral.
They are back now for their silver anniversary and though they are not planning anything special, they just feel they have to be here for this milestone.

Since they are now better acquainted with the islands, they are enjoying island hopping as they visit Mahé, Praslin and La Digue.

“We love the islands, the food, the friendly people and everything else that makes this destination very special to us,” they said.

They noted that a lot of developments have taken place in the country but the charm and character that make the islands unique in every sense of the word, still remains.

The couple has a 24-year-old son and since he has never been to Seychelles, they are planning to bring him along next time they visit.

“We have visited other destinations, such as the Caribbean, but Seychelles has the greatest appeal. We have sent a lot of friends to Seychelles and yes, we will be back to visit because the experience gets better each time,” said the couple.

Seychelles has agreed to help the West African country of Gabon with its tourism development.

This agreement was reached in Libreville after talks between Magloire Ngambia, Gabon's Minister for the Economy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism, and Alain St Ange, chief executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board.

Mr St Ange was in the Gabonese capital last week after an invitation forwarded to the government by Annie Blondel, tourism development adviser to President Ali Bongo Ondimba.

Seychelles remains the one country in the African Union (AU) with a successful tourism industry.
"Tourism remains the pillar of our economy, and since the recent restructuring at our tourism board we have embarked on the road to further consolidate our tourism industry and ensure continued growth in visitor arrival numbers," said Mr St Ange.

After lengthy talks in Libreville between Mr St Ange, Mr Ngambia, Mrs Blondel and Amandine Ogouebandja from Gabon's Ministry of the Economy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism, it was agreed to formalise a request to President James Michel – who holds the tourism portfolio – for Seychelles to help Gabon in its bid to set up a tourism industry.

Areas of cooperation will include setting up a Gabon Tourism Board and tourism information offices in Gabon and potential tourist markets, and helping with the structures to set up destination management company training at the Seychelles Tourism Academy for students from Gabon.

The agreement also covers development and production of a leisure and business guide for Gabon, the development of the tourism licensing inspectorates section with training for staff, and launching a campaign to increase the visibility of Gabon as a tourism destination.

It is expected that as soon as the official documentation between the two governments is exchanged, these points will be tackled and technicians from Seychelles will travel to Gabon to help with specific short-term contracts.

Leaving Gabon for Paris enroute to Seychelles, Mr St Ange said he was impressed by his talks with Mr Ngambia.

“He is committed to see Gabon develop its tourism industry and he wants to see it done well," he said.
Gabon is known to have great untapped potential, with mountain retreats, majestic waterfalls, stretches of empty beach and a people wanting to see this new industry developed.

Mr St Ange also said he discussed with the minister the possibility of Gabon sending to the 2012 Seychelles Carnival a cultural delegation comprising a couple of Gabon's indigenous pygmy tribes.

"It is one way to increase visibility for Gabon as Seychelles invites press and television networks from all over the world to cover its unique ‘Carnival of Carnivals’,” he said. (SeyNat)

Big Carnaval Farewell!

Minister Shamlaye Congratulates Seychelles Tourism Board

Speaking at the closing ceremony on Sunday evening, he said the STB’s hard work was one of the reasons the weekend’s event was such a big success.

“The carnival’s success was hugely because of the Seychellois public, who have come to town in large numbers,” he said.

The ceremony was held in the Stad Popiler car park in the presence of Zimbabwean high officials and hundreds of happy carnival-goers.

Mr Shamlaye said the Creole Festival – held annually in October – will take place as usual this year despite the Carnaval International de Victoria being held.

He explained that both the organising committees have been working together to make the whole event a success.

Meanwhile, STB chief executive Alain St Ange said the event was successful, although there are many areas his organisation plans to improve for next year – making it a better experience for all those attending.
Also during the closing ceremony, the best floats in Saturday’s procession were rewarded for all their efforts.

The contestants were separated into two groups – international and local floats for adults – and there was a further prize for schools.

The organising committee judged the entries on the costumes they wore and their choreography, among other criteria.

It came as no surprise that the Notting Hill Carnival team from London won first prize for the best international float, followed by Indonesia and Zimbabwe in second and third places.

Mason’s Travel, with their colourful float proudly boasting the company colours, came first in the local category followed by the Jj Spirit Foundation and Indian Ocean Tuna.

Winners in the international category were all given trophies, while in the local contest they won cash prizes ranging from R5,000 to R15,000.

The Seychelles Tourism Academy won R15,000 in the schools competition, and the University of Seychelles came second to win R10,000.

The carnival’s organisers also chose the closing ceremony to hold the lottery draw.

Bianca Stanmyer from the Reef Estate won the star prize – a Hyundai i10 car – while F Tirant is now R50,000 richer after winning the first prize while Florida Richard from Copolia won the second prize of R25,000.

Mr St Ange gave all those gathered a rendezvous for March next year when the second Carnaval International de Victoria will be held. (Seychelles Nation)

Italy Delegation heads to Seychelles to participate in the 2011 Seychelles 'Carnaval International de Victoria'

In keeping with its carnival tradition and with the wide array of carnival costumes and masks associated with it, Italy's city of Venice is due to participate in the 2011 Seychelles 'Carnival International de Victoria', due to be held in Seychelles' capital, Victoria between the 4th and 6th of March 2011.

A walk through the streets of Venice will reveal the exquisite craftsmanship of its costumes and masks which date back to the Renaissance, when Venice was among the most powerful states in Europe, and indeed the world.

Now, these are set to grace the streets of Victoria in the Seychelles over 3 days of Carnival fever in the form of a float from Venice which is due to be accompanied by Ms. Sylvanie Toussaint, a Seychelles' Tourism Ambassador residing in Italy.

Italy is a main tourist market for Seychelles and the participation by Italy is a welcome move. 'Seychelles and Italy have a long association, and have been friendly countries. Of Strong Bonds, A Tsunami, And Tales Needed To Be Told Again!

On the 26th of December 2004 I was on holidays visiting the Seychelles. It was early in the morning and by now you are all well aware of the events which unfolded causing massive loss of life and havoc spanning many countries. The tsunami which had struck Indonesia was slowly having its way and was as well about to strike the small islands of the Seychelles.

That morning after speaking to one of my employers about the status of a company owned facility which was located at the port area on the big island of Mahe, I made my way rather in a non hurried manner along the coast intent on a good morning swim. I was at the time totally unaware like many that morning that shortly we too would feel just a bit of what our friends in Indonesia had felt. The horrid news on the extent of damage suffered had still not filtered to me. The worst we thought would be some unusual tidal movements if that!

I can recall the lazy drive that morning with the sky quite blue and the sun shining brightly above. Nothing dawned on me really until I reached Anse Aux Pins and was on a road which ran low and along the beach. It was at that time that I remarked at the amount of people running out of their homes to go by the beach and look out to sea.

As I drove I was thinking to myself, " how it must be a very slow day indeed for all these folks to be 'amused' at the sights on a beach!"

It was not until I was driving down the hill in an area called 'Fairy Land' that I finally stopped the car to look and gaze at water which was quickly moving over the surface of the road. To me it looked as if a river had broken over and was making an easy exit to the sea. Up ahead I noticed what appeared to be some tourists running towards me with their suitcases on the road and when reaching the retreating water, slowly but carefully wading through.

Seeing that they had come from the Fairyland Hotel I decided to pull the car into the hotel parking lot and see what the matter was. Having a friend at the hotel I felt rather comfortable and at ease as I came up to the bar area and met with him. Standing at the bar Charles invited me in and offered a cold SeyBrew which I gladly accepted.

It was at the bar at that moment enjoying a cold beer that I fully understood what was happening and why his guests from the hotel were taking flight.

Seychelles at the moment, Mahe in particular was about to experience a bit of the very same tsunami which had struck hours earlier in Indonesia.

As we stood at the beach bar looking at the ocean one could see just over the reef, water churning and bubbling. Fortunately for us and where the hotel was situated much of the effects of the oncoming water from the ocean was deflected by a huge granite rock which lay just ahead and to the side of the hotel.

It was an awe inspiring sight and moment. I decided to quickly finish my beer and to thank Charles for his hospitality making my way up to higher ground. No swimming for us that day.

A baby hippopotamus that survived the tsunami waves on the Kenyan coast has formed a strong

bond with a giant male century-old tortoise in an animalfacility in the port city of Mombassa, officials said

The hippopotamus, nicknamed Owen and weighing about300 kilograms (650 pounds), was swept down SabakiRiver into the Indian Ocean , then forced back to shorewhen tsunami waves struck the Kenyan coast on December 26, before wildlife rangers rescued him.

"It is incredible. A-less-than-a-year-old hippo has adopted amale tortoise, about a century old, and the tortoise seems to be very happy with being a 'mother'," ecologist Paula Kahumbu,who is in charge of Lafarge Park , told AFP.

"After it was swept away and lost its mother, the hippo was traumatized.It had to look for something to be a surrogate mother.Fortunately , it landed on the tortoise and established a strong bond.They swim, eat and sleep together," the ecologist added. "The hippo follows the tortoise exactly the way it followed its mother.

If somebody approaches the tortoise, the hippo becomes aggressive,as if protecting its biological mother," Kahumbu added.

"The hippo is a young baby, he was left at a very tender age andby nature, hippos are social animals that like to stay with theirmothers for four years," he explained.

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take,but by the moments that take our breath away."

This is a real story that shows that our differences don't mattermuch when we need the comfort of another.

The tortoise in question is of the 'Aldabran' variety and comes from the island of Aldabra in the Seychelles island group. Philosophy behind the Carnival in the Seychelles
When the Seychelles islands were first settled, it was by a blend of individuals of different ethnicity, customs and ways of life. Throughout its history and to this very day, Seychelles has continued to be a melting-pot of peoples from the four corners of the earth who have each contributed their particular thread to the fabric of this vibrant yet peaceful society, adding to it and being, themselves, subtly transformed in return.
Against this background of multi-culturalism, diversity and the coming together of peoples, it is fitting that Seychelles should be, once again, the focal point of an annual ‘Carnaval des Carnavals’ – bringing representatives from the world’s carnivals to the islands to participate in three days of celebration.
This dynamic event will be an ideal forum for each participating country to raise its profile by showing off its own individual colours to the world’s press and, also, contribute to the new melting pot of the ‘Carnaval des Carnavals’.
Seychelles is planning an international carnival scheduled to take place in its capital, Victoria, in March 2011, echoing the time when Seychelles first became a melting pot of different cultures from the four corners of the planet.
Seychelles Revisits its Origins
From 4th to 6th of March 2011, Victoria is set to revisit its multi-ethnic origins when the ‘Carnaval International de Victoria’ comes to town. With participants from several countries with famous carnivals of their own, the Victoria Carnival is on course to bring the capital to life with a grand, open-air restaurant featuring food – and music – from across the world as local hotels, in coordination with various participating countries, set up al fresco restaurants showcasing their particular culture’s culinary skills.
Official Opening of the Carnival
The official opening of the carnival, to be attended by visiting dignitaries from the various participating countries, will take place on a day when festivities are expected to last throughout the night.
Swelled by sailors from international navies whose visits are being planned to coincide with the 3-day carnival, this spectacular event will then move into the Carnival Day featuring a Carnival Procession of participants’ floats on a circular itinerary through the streets of the capital and against a backdrop of music, dance and colourful costumes. The event will have its very own carnival song, composed by local artists to reflect the country’s three national languages: Creole, English and French, as well as music from the participants’ countries.
The local population and visitors will all be encouraged to participate in the spirit of the carnival and its various activities. Seychelles is also expected to add its own floats to the procession featuring the attributes of its main islands, so completing the picture of a vibrant international event celebrating the fact that Seychelles remains an important, harmonious melting pot of peoples from across the world.
4 March 2011 / Day1 Victoria the ‘Melting Pot of Cultures’
The three-day Carnival will start with a large, open alfresco restaurant-styled activity on the 4th March, when the City of Victoria will be turned into an entertainment venue with music from across the world and with food from the four corners of the planet. Participating countries are being encouraged to work with local hotels to set up alfresco restaurants in Victoria to showcase the different cultures’ culinary skills and delights and to sell their products to the public. Music and food will set the stage for the theme of the Carnival - ‘the melting pot of cultures’. The Victoria City celebrations will take place over a whole day and night during which the concept of ‘the melting pot of cultures’ will truly come alive.
The Opening Ceremony: The official opening of the 2011 Seychelles ‘Carnaval International de Victoria’ will take place in the afternoon of Day 1. Visiting dignitaries, representing various participating countries, will be invited to be present to witness the official launch of the 2011 edition of the Seychelles Carnival which will take place in the centre of Victoria.
5 March 2011 / Day2 Carnival Day
The Carnival Day itself is set for the 5th March where floats will gather at the Stadium at Roche Caiman, and move in a Carnival Procession from 10am onwards towards Victoria. The Carnival procession will then tour the main Victoria roads using Francis Rachel Street as its entry point, and return to Roche Caiman Stadium via Independence Avenue and Francis Rachel Street. The procession will follow a circular loop starting at Roche Caiman with school children, spectators and international & local press lining the streets from start to finish. Music and carnival costumes will be in line with the different national floats.
Seychelles will launch a dedicated Carnaval Song which is being composed by a range of local artists to incorporate the country’s three national languages, Creole, English and French. Victoria will showcase music from different parts of the world to create the ambience for the different participating countries and to set the scene for Seychelles as the capital city of the the melting pot of cultures.
After the carnival procession, the carnival participants will take the show to Victoria, supported by the local population who will be invited to join in the spirit of the carnival with their own costumes and accessories.

The Carnival Floats will all assemble at the Stadium for a ‘family fun day’ where the different participants will mingle with the local tourist population and with Seychellois coming from all over Mahé, Praslin, La Digue, Silhouette and the other islands. Food stalls and beverage outlets will be set about the Stadium where an ‘all day musical show’ will be performed by Seychellois artists and by musical & cultural groups from the various participating countries.

Seychelles Week A Hit In Tanzania!

The first Seychelles Week in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, came to an end last Saturday with a traditional Ngalawa boat race.

The week was organised by Seychelles’ honorary consul Maryvone Pool, who is also our appointed tourism ambassador in Tanzania, in collaboration with the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB).
A crowd of some 1,500 local people had gathered for an afternoon of fun at Msasani Minazini Beach, where sounds of top African tracks from Clouds FM radio echoed around the open grounds. The musical group Zez and dancers who had flown in from Seychelles also performed live and added some real Creole ambiance to the event.
Capital Television of Tanzania was present to cover this very exciting last day and capture the thrills as 15 traditional dhows were flagged off to start the race out of Msasani Bay.
The sail of each boat proudly bore the logo of private sponsors, including Air Seychelles, the STB, Bon Voyage, Winglink, Delfina Promotions, Capital Television, Movenpick Royal Palm Hotel, Vodacom, Zantel, ComAir, British Airways, Computer Connections and Precision Air.

While the boats raced each other, the public had a chance to buy crafts from Seychelles such as bags, pareos and intriguingly shaped coco de mer sculptures.
At the end of the race, cash prizes were presented to the winners by Ms Pool, Sharon Rosalie of the STB and representatives of the sponsors.
A raffle draw was also held to cap off the successful week, and the first prize of a holiday to the Seychelles Islands was sponsored by Precision Air and Kenya Airways via Nairobi. The second prize was another air ticket sponsored by Air Seychelles and Com Air.

The curtain was brought down on the event with a vote of thanks by Ms Pool and Ms Rosalie, after which members of the public joined Zez on stage for some farewell sega dancing.

Public Urged To Support Local Artists During Creole Festival!

                           Anytime Is A Wonderful Time To Visit The Seychelles!

The Creole Festival, the unique celebration of the Seychellois culture in all its aspects – its cuisine, dance, folklore and music – is to be held in the coming month.

All the activities for the festival have one thing in common, and that is Creole music.

And local telecommunications company Cable & Wireless Seychelles is calling on the public to support local artists through its latest initiative, Cable Tunes.

This latest trend is a ringtone personalisation service, which allows a person to use a tune that callers can hear before the call is answered to replace the standard ringtone for both post-paid and pre-paid customers.

Terry Servina, C&W’s public relations manager, said Cable Tunes is different from other services because its aim is to support local artists and promote their music.

He said the service is becoming very popular, especially among the young people, and it is for this reason that the company is giving more support during the October festival.

Under the theme Siport artis lokal, the company offers support in various ways, including helping the artists to launch new CDs and give musical performances.

“Young, upcoming artists need support to start their career, and we have seen that there is a need to help them as they are full of talent,” added Mr Servina.

It costs the artists a lot to produce a single, but Mr Servina said through this initiative they can have just one song and add it to the service for their fans.

This, he said, can help the artists save money which they can later use to compile a complete CD.

Albert Duncan, product executive, said Cable & Wireless advertises the content on its website in four categories – oldies but goodies, latest tunes, traditional tunes and most popular – and in adverts in the media.

He said for each tune there is a revenue share between C&W and the artist.

Clients are calling to ask for songs that were among the top hits once, and Mr Duncan said this shows the service is appreciated.
Mr Servina said the company set a target which, to their surprise, was met after only three weeks, which shows people are responding well to Cable Tunes.

The two managers are also calling on local artists to make an effort to encourage their fans or the public in general to register with Cable Tunes so they can sell their work.
The company is working on several projects such as a charity show under the theme Siport artis lokal and in line with the Cable Tunes initiative.

Mr Duncan said the artists have responded very well to the idea, and a good relationship has been developed between the two sides.

Hello there! Firstly thank you for visiting our BLOG about the Seychelles and of course providing updates on Ghana and Kenya as well! If you are a first time visitor to this little BLOG then welcome we appreciate your visit.

Just a few updates to post today before getting back to the shop which might be of interest to you.

August is here and in a few days our young country, 34 years young, will once again witness the celebration of the birthdays of two of our presidents in the same month! For many countries this might not be significant, however we view this with some importance owing to the fact that we are a relative "newcomer" to the club of nation states. What we are seeing here is perhaps what the United States experienced 200 years ago when they celebrated the birth dates of George Washington, their first president, and Thomas Jefferson who was the 3rd president.

Happy this day, although a few days early, to send our best regards and happy birthday wishes to President James Mancham, who was born on the 11th of August 1939, and President James Michel, who was born on the 16th of August 1944. President Mancham, a former president and founding president of the Republic of Seychelles, championed early on the industry of tourism to the islands, with a high regard to the natural beauty of the islands. Our current Head of State, President James Michel, as well recognizes the importance of tourism, and recently ordered a review of this important ministry and personally taking over the portfolio. An important indication as to how serious and important tourism is to our young republic. Happy Birthdays - President Michel and President Mancham. Thank you for your service and dedication to our Seychelles!

Seychelles Receives Its 100,000 th Visitor. Alain St. Ange who is not only the new CEO for Seychelles Tourism, recently appointed by President Michel, and who is as well quite adept @ FaceBook postings, posted a few days ago that the Seychelles would be expecting its 100,000th visitor in a few days. Well the number was achieved a few days ago indeed, and Alain and his hard working team were present at the Pointe Larue International airport on the BIG island of Mahe, to welcome the lucky person. Stay tuned as we update this event with the attention it deserves. Meanwhile rest content with this posted photo of Alain, ever the hardworking CEO, as he debarks from the Cat Coco fast ferry onto the jetty @ Praslin carrying some young palm trees for onward planting! The above is the intro to Face West aesthetiques new website promoting its 'exclusive' spa service. Located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the company has been around for the last 23years offering 'by appointment' only service and beauty therapy treatments.

Why the mention here? Well this is simple really. We really appreciated the service and dedication of the owner of the Spa, and being that the owner was as well from the Seychelles, how could we not make a mention?

On July 1st 2010 we released to all our clients and contacts, and then made a posting here on this blog, 5th July 2010, that we had entered into a joint project, and that was private label spa products.

Seychelles' Miss Regatta!

The 2010 Regatta beauty pageant will be held at the International Conference Centre on Saturday July 24 under the theme Protection of the Environment, whose main aim is to encourage the girls to choose outfits made of recyclable materials.
The contestants this year are aged between 17 and 26, and are from all walks of life. Some are married, some single and one is a mother of two.

The show will last a little more than one hour, and the girls will all parade in their evening wear, swimwear and casual outfit. Many young artists will perform during the show, which will include some new talents as well as others reappearing on the music scene after a long absence.

Miss Regatta 2010 will win a return ticket to Kenya, R5,000 in cash, a full diving course and a weekend for two at the Domaine de l’Orangeraie among other prizes.

There will also be prizes for the First and Second Mermaid, Miss Personality and Miss Photogenic.
The beauty pageant is just one of the events to take place before the Regatta itself.

The Mr Regatta contest will be held on July 23 at the Tequila Boom nightclub and will be followed one week later by the Regatta fair, which will take place on Saturday July 31 and August 1.

The Regatta is an annual event organised by the Round Table with the help of various sponsors.

Memories Of The Seychelles!

The back area of my grandparents home has little changed. This simple little stand with water pipe has stood there for the past 30 + years. Originally built by my grandfather Antonio he layed a waterline to the river and brought it to this point where Maxime stands today.

Its amazing to see for me.

As a child I would use it to wash my feet before going into the main house. I would prefer however to wash my feet in the river as my grandfather did every early morning and night. Fresh clean water cascading down the rocks into a basin he built. On hot days or after heavy rains we would all gather with my cousins and go swimming or slide down the rocks now pouring with heavy water flooded by the rains. Sliding into the river.

He would clean fish here as well or late at night and even in the rain be outside brushing his teeth. I would join him. Once we bathed outside - the water so cold but fresh from the river.

I miss those times. Times of respect and understanding. Where simple greetings were greatly appreciated. Where stories were told by friends dropping in as the skies drew dark. Sharing a story and a little drink. Of the outside kitchen where my grandfather would cook up a quick little meal before bringing it in to th house to be devoured.

I loved catsup on my food, and still do. Opening the little fridge on its wooden stand and moving aside the ants forming a line to try and get inside. Some bread, butter, tomato sauce or catsup, some cold water or a soft drink from Waterloo or SeyPearl bought up the street from the local shop.

This was Baie Lazare for me and before that Mare Anglaise. A time with my grandparents and extended family. My youth has long since past. My memories though remain. As does the memories of those who have past and long since been buried. They still are there for me. I miss them all.

Well its about 2027hrs in the Seychelles! Friday night and many are out dining somewhere, or taking a walk on the beach, rain permitting, or just sitting back relaxing on the 'la varang' or patio, taking in the night sky. As for me? Well busy updating this BLOG, the websites for both Seychelles and Ghana and taking some bookings. Someone has to do it right?

Tourism is the mainstay of the economy contributing over 21% of the GDP (direct contribution) and accounts for more than 60% of the Foreign exchange earnings. The tourism strategy of the Government of Seychelles is to attain self-sustaining economic growth by securing targeted increases in the number of tourist visits to the country as well as the amount spent by each tourist.

Since the inception of the Seychelles Tourism Board in April 2005, there has been a dedicated effort to improve tourism products on offer and market the destination overseas. After extensive market research and collaboration with the trade, STB launched the new brand The Seychelles Islands…another world, internationally in March 2007. The new brand aims to encompass the great diversity that the Seychelles islands have to offer across the spectrum of its 115 islands.

European visitors lead arrival figures comprising of over 80 per cent of total arrivals. Our main markets are France, U.K., Italy and Germany and new emerging markets include South Africa, Russia, the Middle East, China and South Korea.

In 2007 a record number of arrivals exceeded 160,000 visitors with an average stay in Seychelles of 10 days.

The decision taken by the Seychelles government to position itself among the best, environment-friendly destinations in the world has ensured that tourism development in the country is guided by policies which encourage the preservation and conservation of our natural environment.

The answer to Fun Quiz 15! I am the island of St. Anne.

Early settlers landing upon her shores and setting up a relief station while the main settlement was established on the island of Mahe.

Named after the saint Anne, meaning "favor" or "grace." of David’s house and line, was the mother of the Virgin Mary and grandmother of Jesus Christ according to Christian and Islamic tradition. The name Anne is the Greek rendering of her Hebrew name Hannah.

Historians noted the extremely hazardous conditions the settlers met while on Mahe, recalling that there existed immense marshes along the coast from where modern day Victoria is south towards Cascade, and laying within were large salt water variety crocodiles, not to mention sharks, making it extremely hazardous to haphazard exploration.

The name therefore suggests a welcome sanctuary from what was across the bay a short distance away, mortal peril!

Later of course the island was used by the British colonial power, a fueling depot was established, and not to be forgotten, a refitting station for whalers mostly US flagged sailing ships bound back for the east coast of the USA, primarily Boston, Massachusetts, this in the late 19th century.

The island would serve its purpose again during World War II, and still later house students for the youth service, headquarters for the Marine National Parks, until today where there sits a luxury hotel. The island of course sits just within easy view of Victoria, still rugged, beautiful and still offering that sanctuary to those seeking a different perspective. Gone are the days however, well easily within my childhood recollection, of nipping over in a small boat to take in the sights, picnic on the beach with family and friends and celebrate the day of the saint.

DescriptionBlue Ocean Events is the company appointed by the Seychelles government to organise a yearly week of regattas named “The Seychelles Regatta” from 2009 onwards.

The Seychelles Regatta is an exclusive, semi-professional competition bringing together 20 companies that will sail the magnificent sites of the Seychelles Islands over eight days. The fleet will consist of 40 to 70-footers catamarans and crews of 4 to 8 people, mainly from Europe and South Africa. Benefiting from some of the world’s finest fishing spots; this year’s competition will also include a deep-sea fishing competition alongside the sailing races.

Spice will be added to the competition by the participation of big names in sailing. Michel Desjoyeaux, Vendée Globe 2008/2009 and 2000/2001 and The Transat 2004 winner, among many other races, has already registered for the annual event which he says he would not miss for the world!

Who Am I? My daughter was romanced by someone who wore blue suede shoes! Although around a golf ball I had little time to play golf! Not from the Seychelles but my footprint loomed large over the islands for many years where I worked! Je suis?

Answer to Fun Quiz 11! Congrats to Juliette and T.Y. for all those who follow and play! Seychelles may be small islands but that does not mean that we do not have many many interesting stories, links, contributions to be made in this Big Beautiful World! The answer is United States Air Force officer Paul Beaulieu, formerly of the USAF Tracking Station at La Misere and father to Priscilla Beaulieu Presley! If you have a photo of Mr. Beaulieu kindly share it. Watch for our next Fun Quiz!

In 1948 her mother met a United States Air Force officer named Paul Beaulieu, from Quebec. The couple were married within a year. Beaulieu took over the raising of Priscilla and was the only father Priscilla would ever know. Over the next few years, Priscilla grew up quickly, helping to care for the growing family as her father's Air Force career moved them from Connecticut to New Mexico to Maine and later the Seychelles!

It was in Germany however, at the Eagles Club, that Priscilla met Currie Grant, a young American Air Force recruit whose Commanding Officer knew Priscilla's father. Grant offered to introduce Priscilla to Elvis Presley, stating that he was "...good friends..." with the singer, and that he and his wife would visit quite often. Being cautious and skeptical of such a claim, Priscilla said she would have to ask her parents, and over the next two weeks Grant met with them and assured them that she would be well chaperoned. The rest is of course history!

Some years later when Paul Beaulieu arrived in Seychelles, circa 1963, to manage the USAF tracking station located atop the mountain of La Misere, word got out that the new officer was the father of Mrs. Presley! A local artist by the name of Mickey Mancham had emulated the King as the islands were simply mad about Elvis!

The arrival of the Beaulieu family was well appreciated by all and added to the wonderful flavour of what is the Seychelles Islands!

CBS' Amazing Race, Races To Seychelles' La Digue Island!

The Amazing Race TV show filmed in Seychelles earlier this year was aired in the US last week where it reached a viewership of over 14 million and came in number one in its time slot.

The episode of the Amazing Race filmed in Seychelles showcased the islands of Mahé, La Digue, St Pierre and Praslin, as it followed the contestants racing from the islands from breath-taking helicopter angles of view.

It featured the contesting teams on La Digue faced with a choice to either load a huge bunch of coconuts onto an oxcart at L’Union Estate and transport them to La Digue Jetty or use a banana to lure a giant tortoise along a ‘race course’ on the front lawn of L’Union Estate, after which they had to carry a large bunch of bananas to a fruit stand by the La Digue Jetty.

While this challenge was being filmed, it was discovered that some of the teams did not deliver the exact number of coconuts as instructed and thus they had to steer their stubborn ox all the way back to L’Union Estate to retrieve the one missing coconut.

After successfully delivering either the coconuts or the bananas, the teams had to take a one-hour schooner ride to the island of St Pierre. There, they had to free-dive and retrieve a bottle containing a map to their next destination – a beach on Praslin Island.

They then had to swim ashore to the beach on Praslin, where they were greeted by a Seychellois and Phil Keoghan, the host of the show.

The production of this show involved 60 foreign crew members and over 40 Seychellois.

The local production company iMage Production of Praslin oversaw the preparation, production and the crews for the three islands – Mahé, Praslin and La Digue. The setting up took over two months to complete for a one-day shoot and all went smoothly.

The Seychelles episode was filled with great racing drama, lots of humour and the incredible beauty of Seychelles. It was considered a great success.

The director of Tourism Marketing, Alain St Ange, who worked alongside Paul Turcotte of the iMage Productions for this production in Seychelles, said that the tourism board is thankful that the beauty of our islands continues to attract film producers to our shores.

“Hitting the TV screens in densely populated markets with breathtaking scenes will help us get the name Seychelles more known and make our islands more visible,” he said.

Many positive comments have already been received from viewers in the USA and in Singapore.

The Seychelles Tourism Board has made new appointments in its 'Tourism Ambassador' programme, bringing the total to 60 Seychellois in 25 countries worldwide now representing Seychelles.

This new initiative saw Seychellois born, Mrs. Rosemarie Pothin, appointed as the Seychelles Tourism Ambassador for Kenosha, Wisconsin, USA.

The announcement of the second group of Tourism Ambassadors was made by Vice President Joseph Belmont at a trade lunch on Thursday March 11 at the ITB trade fair in Berlin, Germany.

“We shall continue to identify more Seychellois living and working overseas and propose to them to become part of the Seychelles Tourism Ambassadors programme,” said the Vice President.

It is to be noted that the first group of Seychellois appointed as Tourism Ambassadors were announced in January during the Seychelles’ Tourism Marketing Meeting in Victoria, Mahé.

Vice President Belmont said that the empowering of Seychellois in the four corners of the world to defend and promote Seychelles remains a novel idea and one that the tourism board will continue to develop.

Alain St Ange, the Seychelles’ Director of Tourism Marketing, on his part said that the country’s overseas offices will now have added support to more adequately service our tourism markets.

“The Tourism Ambassadors will be like consuls, but here only to promote and continuously help develop Seychelles as the tourist destination,” he said.
“The saying ‘Once a Seychellois, always a Seychellois’ cannot be more true, and these men and women will do our country proud as they become ‘foot soldiers’ for the pillar of our economy, our tourism industry.
”

Mr St Ange added that it is encouraging to see so many Seychellois nationals themselves making the approach to become a Tourism Ambassador, after the concept was launched in January, and in doing so, express their wish to work for Seychelles.
“I firmly believe that all Seychellois living abroad are natural ambassadors of their country of birth, the country that they love. They are well-known in their countries of residence and their network of contacts and local knowledge will be invaluable tools in promoting Seychelles as a tourism destination across the globe,” he explained.

The Tourism Ambassadors will work closely with the country’s overseas offices and marketing teams and will provide a sharp tip to promotional efforts, with the ability to access individuals and organizations on their home turf in a way that would not be possible through traditional marketing methods.

The Seychelles Tourism Board is presently finalising a dedicated newsletter for the Tourism Ambassadors to keep them updated on Seychelles tourism news and what the different members are doing in their respective cities.

Sharen Venus, the tourism board’s Marketing Executive overseeing the Tourism Ambassadors programme, said that the enthusiasm of the newly-appointed members was so evident and she was convinced that their personal contacts will help make Seychelles better known around the world.

Seychelles wins environmental travel accolade

The world’s top travel magazine – Condé Nast Traveller – has voted Seychelles the most environmentally friendly destination in its annual readers’ travel awards.

Seychelles prides itself on environmental conservation, and this nomination serves to recognise its efforts.

In the overall ranking for the world’s top 100 destinations, Seychelles comes out 30th, well ahead of neighbour Mauritius in 42nd position. Maldives is rated sixth.

Sicily is the big winner this year for the best destination award, coming top of the 100 destinations.

In the category for the best 20 islands, Seychelles comes out in a comfortable sixth place, one place ahead of Mauritius in seventh. This category was won by Sicily, followed closely by Maldives.

North Island, which is occasionally rated in the magazine, has also received a nomination that recognises its efforts towards protecting the environment. It finished second behind Soneva Gili of the Maldives for environmental friendliness.

In the overall accommodation ratings for the Middle East, Africa and the Indian Ocean islands, North Island clinched ninth position out of 20 top hotels.

Fun Quiz Part Trois! Who Am I? I love the Seychelles and have spent many years there. The world knows me best perhaps for being in the jungle with guerillas and not for my work in the Seychelles. I tried my hands at a run for the presidency. I once took a ride on an ox-cart on the island of La Digue. Who am I? Answer on Monday!

I am of course Ingrid Betancourt Pulecio.

Ms. Betancourt Pulecio (born 25 December 1961)[2] is a French-Colombian politician, former senator and anti-corruption activist.

Betancourt was kidnapped by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) on 23 February 2002 and was rescued by Colombian security forces six and a half years later on 2 July 2008.

That same year Ms. Betancourt accepted an invitation from the President of Seychelles, James Michel, on behalf of the Seychellois nation, to come back to Seychelles.

Ms. Betancourt and her two children visted and were hosted by the state. President Michel bestowed on Ms.Betancourt Seychellois citizenship, and after the Benancourt family spent several weeks relaxing and getting to meet with old Seychellois friends.

Ms. Betancourt had been in the Seychelles working to help establish the French School in the 1980's.

Keeping up the pace we asked another question to our friends on the Group 'UniqueOffersSeychelles' - this on FaceBook. The question was basically, " which famous USA personality once visited the Indian Ocean Fishing Club, located on the island of Praslin?" Further we mentioned that this was in the 1960's, he came to go fishing, was an actor. Hmmm? We wonder.

Well of course the answer was, Ronald Reagan! Actor, union leader, governor, and president of the United States. Visiting the Seychelles, Ronald Reagan spent some time on the island of Praslin staying at the Indian Ocean Fishing Club and enjoying his visit fishing in and around the island. Perhaps coincidental being that Mr. Reagan residing in the state of California, home to Disney, stayed in one of the rooms named after Mickey Mouse! Did he enjoy his visit and did he catch any fish? The answer to both is a BIG Yes!!

Time can dull the senses or memories. Thank goodness then for recorded history. 22 January 2010 marked 109years since the passing of the great queen, Her Royal Majesty Queen Victoria, Queen of The United Kingdom & Ireland, and first Empress of India under the British Raj.

At the time of her rule Seychelles was a British colony. Despite the fact that she never actually set foot onto the islands, every Seychellois home and office at the time had a photo of her hanging on the wall in her honor. This tradition continued well into the establishment of the 1st Republic on 29th June 1976, however at this time the photo of a royal had been updated to portray Her Royal Majesty. Queen Elizabeth II. I remember fondly walking into the shops in downtown Victoria, or my grandmother's house and looking up to see a portrait of 'QEII'. As you can now guess our capital was in fact named after the late great queen and in a small way by mentioning her today, I pay my respects to her memory and her reign which at one time involved subjects residing in parts Africa, India, Canada, parts of China, and islands and holdings scattered throughout the globe - 1/4 of the world's population at the time.

So here is to the late queen, Queen Victoria. Your memory lives on and in your honour our capital city was named after you.

Seychellois Step Up To Help Haiti

Many people from different parts of the islands have either called in at the Red Cross office or sent their contributions. Volunteers from the Red Cross Youth were also at the ready with collection boxes in Victoria last Saturday morning.

One lady who contributed her savings for those affected in Haiti said: “My husband and I wanted to do something and wish that we could be there to provide at least some milk to those in need.

“We know that our contributions will at least help one or two people there; it is something that comes from within – compassion for a fellow human being.”

An RCSS spokesperson said: “I guess this is what it is all about – compassion for those affected in Haiti and bringing about the idea of togetherness, especially during bad times. This is Red Cross values at work in Seychelles.

“We received numerous phone calls from people wanting to help and donate not only cash but clothing, while others wanted to know if there was an opportunity to help on-site with their professional expertise such as medical and psycho-social help, debris clearance etc.”

The public’s strong response to the appeal may be a result of the similarity in our languages, since Seychelles and Haiti are both Creole-speaking countries, the RCSS said.

Whatever the reasons, it is important to know that something positive has indeed come out of this whole disastrous situation, it added.

Meanwhile, the RCSS is still collecting contributions, and donation boxes have been placed in other businesses and organisations such as banks, private clinics and shops. Courtesy - Seychelles Nation

Our Creole Cousins In Haiti.... Our Thoughts & Prayers

Indeed I was all set after the Christmas period and allowing for the excitement of the New Year's events to taper down to update the blog about UniqueSeychelles when the tragedy of events unfolded in Haiti. I will of course pause for now allowing time and a moment as our thoughts and prayers are with our Creole cousins. We pray that the reports of massive casualties are wrong and that the world can unite to assist rapidly and rescue those in need. Debout avek couraz nou ban kousin! Remembering The Tsunami In Seychelles 26th Dec 2004

With the Christmas season upon us where we see ourselves celebrating with our families and close friends it is indeed fitting that we take a moment to remember all the victims of the Tsunami of 2004. Over 150,000 souls were lost that day, where early in the morning a seaquake off the coast of Indonesia, was followed by a tsunami which was felt all the way to Seychelles and to the East coast of Africa!

On the morning of the 26th December 2004, Boxing Day, or the day after Christmas, we were in the Seychelles on holiday from Ghana, and on our way for a morning swim. Earlier in the morning I watched with horror the developing story on CNN of the events unfolding off the coast of Indonesia. I remember speaking with my director at the time about the events unfolding a few thousand miles away and what effect if any the event would have on the Seychelles and our business which was located at the port area in Victoria. At the time I speculated that perhaps we would see strange tides for the coming few days. I could not have imagined that a short few hours later how wrong I would be on my speculation, thinking later how I wish I had been correct - strange tides indeed!

At around 9am Seychelles times while on the way for a morning swim we witnessed the arrival of waves which earlier in the morning had so devastated our neighbours in the Indian Ocean. I will spare you the reader of the particulars of those waves and add that never in my short life of 42 years have I seen such a mighty spectacle as that which the ocean 'played' upon our beautiful shores that day. India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Maldives, Kenya and many more countries in the Indian Ocean basin were not spared that day and neither would we in the Seychelles.

Our country is small - 116 islands, 80,000 + total population, so waves which struck down so many earlier in the day would surely not spare us!

Much damage was inflicted to homes, hotels, businesses and other structures located along our coastline that morning. Victoria our capital city was flooded several times over. Sail boats, fishing boats and other pleasure crafts were sucked out to sea and tossed about as if bath toys. Immediately the nation pulled together and began the effort of cleaning up and or securing property even as Toyota pick-up trucks floated down the street! Whilst we did not suffer massive casualties, we did nevertheless suffer a few deaths. A close and dear friend that day lost her life as she became a victim of the natural events that day. Her memory and love of life and family, will always be with us!

Indeed the Seychelles did pull together that day! It did take many months for the country to recover and rebuild what mother nature took away. Hotels were cleaned up. Homes repaired. And businesses reopened. The bridges which had been damaged or washed away were rebuilt. Those who died live on in our thoughts and hearts.

Seychelles today 5 years on is indeed what it was then and that is paradise islands on earth! We are humbled and in awe of what we have been given.
